The Sports Artist of Baroque EpochThe painter, the sculptor, the jeweller and writer Pieter de Hoogh was born in 1629 in Rotterdam.
Among his numerous works there is also a portrait of king of Poland Yan Sobesky, and impudent caricatures on the French king Lui XIV.
The talent of de Hoogh was showed in illustrations for bible plots and many known literary works. He also has a series of 71 engravings on a theme of sports, many of which have been executed for his friend Nicolas Peter, who devoted all free time to wrestling.
On engravings of Hoogh you can meet not only wrestling, but also other kinds of sports of an epoch of baroque: fencing, bowling. On one of figures game is represented, which sense consists in punching a sphere through a ring installed into the ground. The artist had so deeply liked spirit of sports, that he was interested not only in process of the game, but how they prepared the ground, cut and level a lawn. By the way, similar game is popular in Holland and Germany to this day.
Among the works of de Hoogh there are engravings, devoted to the skating, the most popular sports entertainment in Holland that time. On one of engravings he has represented the kolw player (national game in which participants on skates should lead a sphere by an iron stick to a peg hammered into ice).
At this picture the details of clothes are so distinctly visible all that it can help to the modern fashion designers of sports equipment.
